Editing Taxes on Invoice Line Items

Learn how to add or remove tax on individual line items directly while editing an invoice

Written by Dhwani S

You can add, remove or edit tax on individual line items directly while creating or editing an invoice, without needing to change the item's default tax setup.

Each invoice line item can carry its own tax setting, independent of the item's default. This means you can charge tax to one client and not another for the same subject or service. This applies whether you're creating a new invoice or editing an existing one.

How to edit taxes on a line item

  1. Navigate to Billing > Invoices. Open the respective invoice, click on the Actions button on the top right, and click Edit (see Edit an Invoice for how to enter edit mode).

  2. Find the line item you want to update, and click on the Pen icon to the right. The line item box expands to allow you to edit the details as needed. Its applied taxes are listed under Taxes, directly beneath the item's validity and description.

  3. To remove a tax from that item, click the bin icon next to it. This only removes the tax from this specific invoice line item. It doesn't change the item's default tax setup.

  4. To add another tax to that item, click + Add tax below its tax list and select from your saved taxes which you have created under Billing > Taxes. (Learn more about adding a tax here.)

  5. The invoice totals (Subtotal, Total excluding tax, individual tax lines, Rounded off, Total) update automatically to reflect your changes.

  6. Click Save to apply your changes to the invoice.

💡 This is available both when creating a new invoice/subscription and when editing an existing one. The same Taxes list with a bin icon (remove) and +Add tax (add) appears on each line item in both flows.

⚠️ Changing a line item's tax on an invoice only affects that invoice. It does not update the item's own tax configuration, so future invoices for that item will still use its default tax setup unless you edit them too.
